2016 Palmento Costanzo Prefillossera Etna DOC Rosso ~ Red Wine

Palmento Costanzo

$265.00

750 ml bottle

Certified organic

90% Nerello Mascalese, 10% Nerello Cappuccio grapes from 120-year old pre-phylloxera vines located in Contrada Santo Spirito, Passopisciaro on the northern slopes of Mt Etna, Sicily at 750 m above sea level

It ages in large 500-litre French oak barrels for 24 months followed by 12 months in the bottle before release.

This wine is an intense ruby red colour. It has delicate rose notes over the dense maraschino cherry fruit, with subtle nuttiness of oak, chilli, spice and a leafiness suggesting some stem in the ferment. Ripe maraschino, spice and stones, with compact firm tannins that take time to unwind. It has a perfumed, spicy, long finish.

It is wonderful with cured meats, medium-aged cheeses, pasta with tomato sauce, risotto, white and red meat.

Decanting is recommended at least one hour prior.

Cellaring potential: 20 - 25 years

Only 1700 bottles were produced!

93 points James Suckling:

“I love how the plush blue fruit here is interspersed with even riper notes of baking spices, rosemary and oregano. Hints of sun-dried tomatoes and volcanic ash. The palate is finely laced with silky threads of tannins that knit bright red fruit together.”

  • About The Producer

The Palmento Costanzo estate is located in the town of Contrada Santo Spirito, Passopisciaro on the northern slopes of Etna.

Founded by husband and wife Mimmo and Valeria Costanzo in 2011, the name “Palmento” derives from the 19th century 'palmento' grape stone press which they have painstakingly restored.

14 hectares of terraced vineyards with nutrient-rich, brown volcanic sands grow at elevations ranging from 680 to 800 metres and farming is carried out organically.

Vines vary in age from 5-30 years old for the fresher, younger Mofete range and up to 120 years for the pre-phylloxera vines.
